Travis Dickey had two things going for him when he opened his first restaurant in 1941, the love for talking and the one to make barbecue. A big personality and the ability to smoke barbecue goes a long way in Texas. He had one other asset that has been a foundational backbone in the history of so many American restaurants, a supportive and very involved spouse, Miss Ollie. Money was tight in the beginning, and he sold advertisements on his restaurant sign. He continued his love for talking and authentic barbecue until his sons, Ronald and T.D. took over the family business in 1967.

Kids eat free at Dickey’s BBQ, and that is just the beginning. They do a great job of serving families at the Dallas based chain. I’m sure when the restaurant began in 1941 there wasn’t a focus on the nutritional aspect of the food, but Dickey’s has risen above the rest of the barbecue competition in their desire to make it the best quality with their ingredients. For a restaurant that has been around for so long, they have done a fantastic job of staying true to their roots and family combined with the changing of times in the importance and value of quality food ingredients.

Dickey’s was a fun restaurant for research. Who doesn’t love a story that begins in the 1940’s with a young married couple and remains a (now thriving) restaurant almost 80 years later that is still family owned and operated. One of the most impressive things was the company’s recognition of the skills and talent of an in-law of the founder and making her CEO.
